Srinagar, Dec 29: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday stated that the government made every effort to respond promptly and efficiently to the heavy snowfall that impacted daily life across Kashmir.
Speaking to reporters after chairing a high-level meeting on restoration efforts for the second consecutive day, Omar emphasised that the primary focus was on clearing snow, restoring electricity, and ensuring the availability of essential supplies. “We tried our best to respond quickly and efficiently to the snowfall,” he said.
In a bid to enhance the restoration process, Omar revealed that first-time MLAs, irrespective of their political affiliations, were included in the meeting alongside divisional and district officers. “We ensured their participation to gather valuable feedback and suggestions,” he added. He further noted that the response from the administration to these inputs had been satisfactory.
Omar mentioned that specific instructions had been issued to the administration to act proactively, especially in light of the forecast for more snowfall in the coming days. “We emphasized the need for sustained efforts to address the challenges posed by adverse weather conditions,” he remarked.
The meeting also included Cabinet Ministers, Divisional Commissioners, and Deputy Commissioners. Discussions centered on swift responses to power outages and disruptions in connectivity. “The administration has been directed to remain on high alert and ensure timely action,” Omar stated.
Stressing the importance of smooth traffic movement on the National Highway, the Chief Minister called for enhanced coordination between the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Traffic Police, and District Administrations.
Chief Minister stressed the importance of continuous monitoring and synergy among various departments to avoid any inconvenience to the public.
In response to a question regarding the passing of Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, Omar proposed that the Banihal-Qazigund Tunnel, a vital lifeline for the region, be dedicated to Dr. Singh in recognition of his transformative impact on Jammu and Kashmir.
“Dr. Singh’s tenure brought unparalleled progress to J&K. Even after his time in office, his contributions remain underappreciated. From the four-laning of the Jammu-Srinagar highway to the scholarship schemes enabling Kashmiri students to study outside, Dr. Singh’s initiatives reshaped our future,” Omar said.
Omar further highlighted Dr. Singh’s legacy, including several landmark initiatives such as the cross-LOC trade, the round-table dialogue on J&K, and job reservations for Kashmiri Pandits. “The improvement of living conditions in camps like Jagti Colony also stands as a testament to his compassionate leadership,” he added.
Referring to the Banihal-Qazigund Tunnel, Omar called it a revolution in connectivity for Kashmir. “This tunnel has transformed travel and trade. Dedicating it to Dr. Manmohan Singh would be a befitting tribute to his vision and commitment to the region,” he concluded.
