Jammu, Mar 05: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday said that the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department will explore the feasibility of establishing a separate Tourism Development Authority (TDA) for Gurez, given the valley’s vast tourism potential and growing visitor footfall in recent years.
Responding to a question raised by MLA Gurezi, Nazir Gurezi, in the Legislative Assembly, Omar acknowledged that Gurez Valley has emerged as an increasingly popular tourist destination, witnessing a steady rise in visitor numbers since 2020. He noted that the valley’s pristine beauty, unique culture, and adventure tourism potential make it an ideal candidate for structured development through a dedicated tourism authority.
“The government will take up the matter with the Tourism Department to assess the need for a separate Tourism Development Authority for Gurez,” the Chief Minister said, adding that the initiative would aim to improve tourism infrastructure, promote sustainable development, and boost local employment opportunities.
Gurez Valley, known for its breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural heritage, has seen a notable increase in tourist arrivals in recent years.
In 2021, the valley received around 15,000 visitors, a significant jump from previous years. Similarly in 2022, tourist arrivals rose further to 20,000, as Gurez gained recognition as an emerging offbeat destination. And in 2023, the numbers soared to over 35,000, with domestic and international travellers drawn to its untouched beauty, adventure activities, and traditional wooden architecture.
In response to a supplementary question by MLA Gurezi, who pointed out that Gurez was listed among the 13 offbeat destinations of J&K in the Union Budget, Omar assured that the J&K government will take up the matter with the Union Tourism Ministry to ensure Gurez secures official recognition and support at the national level.
“We will raise the issue with the Union Tourism Ministry to include Gurez in the list of offbeat destinations receiving central assistance,” he stated.
The proposed Tourism Development Authority is expected to enhance tourism facilities, improve road connectivity, and promote eco-friendly tourism initiatives, ensuring that Gurez continues to thrive as a must-visit destination in Jammu and Kashmir.
