Pulwama, Mar 24 : The Jammu and Kashmir government has stated that it has no plans to establish a Government Degree College (GDC) in Litter Tehsil of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district. The information was revealed in response to a question raised by MLA Ghulam Mohi-ud-din Mir in the Legislative Assembly.
In its reply, the government acknowledged that no Degree College is currently operational in Litter. However, it assured that students from the area have access to six existing Government Degree Colleges in the region, including GDC Zainapora, GDC Pulwama, Government College for Women (GCW) Pulwama, GDC Awantipora, GDC Rajpora, and GDC Bijbehara. Among these, GDC Zainapora, located approximately six kilometers from Litter, is the closest option available to students.
The government further clarified that no new colleges are being opened at present. However, applications for the establishment of new institutions are being evaluated based on set parameters. The response also highlighted that the Higher Education Department is currently prioritizing the development of infrastructure for 50 newly sanctioned colleges, including nine in South Kashmir, approved under Government Order No. 48-HE of 2019 (Dated 05.02.2019) and Government Order No. 106-HE of 2019 (Dated 01.03.2019).
