Srinagar, July 29: Senior Vice President of J&K Peoples Conference and former minister, Abdul Gani Vakil on Monday accused the government of failing to adequately irrigate paddy crops.
“This neglect has left countless farmers in a dire situation, threatening both their livelihoods and the region’s food security,” Vakil said in a statement.
He claimed that despite repeated assurances and plans announced by the authorities, the irrigation infrastructure remains “grossly inadequate”. “Farmers are reporting severe water shortages, leading to stunted crop growth and, in many cases, total crop failure. This situation has exacerbated the struggles of those who rely on these crops for their income and sustenance,” he said.
According to the statement, the PC leader while touring and addressing party workers in Rafiabad at Nathipora, Tujjar Sharief, Bharampora, and Reban, said the farmers are frustrated as their crops dry up while they wait for the promised irrigation support. “The farmers are facing massive losses and criticized the lack of clear communication from the government on resolving the issue,” he said.
Vakil warned that without immediate action, the impact on the economy and food supply could be devastating. He demanded urgent measures, including the repair and expansion of irrigation systems, to prevent further losses.
The former minister urged the government to prioritise this issue and provide the necessary support to save the paddy crops and protect the agricultural community.
