Baramulla, 23 Apr: Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president, Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday launched a scathing attack on the National Conference (NC)-led government and accused it of failing to fulfil its pre-election promises and pushing the youth of the Union Territory into despair.
Addressing a 'massive workers’ convention' at Dak Bungalow Baramulla, Mehbooba said that nearly two years after coming to power, the NC government has failed to deliver on its commitments, "including the promise of providing one lakh jobs and 200 units of free electricity."
“Despite being meritorious, our youth are jobless. Unemployment has pushed them into depression, and many are falling into drug addiction. Their parents are deeply worried,” she said.
She alleged that the government betrayed the massive mandate given by the people.
"People voted in the hope of safeguarding land and job rights, addressing electricity issues, and ensuring protection of religious institutions but the government left them dejected," she said.
She said instead of fulfilling promises, power projects are being handed over to outsiders while local commitments remain unaddressed.
"The claims made by the government are now exposed on the ground,” she said.
Referring to her outreach programme “Kath Baat,” Mehbooba said she had personally interacted with people across Kashmir and found widespread distress and anxiety among the masses.
“People are under immense stress. Even in mosques, prayer leaders are allegedly being asked to vet sermons before delivering them,” she claimed.
"Mohalla committees are also facing hurdles in carrying out social and rehabilitation programmes."
The PDP president also raised concerns about the Sikh community saying that despite their longstanding contribution to Kashmir’s social fabric, they have not received adequate support packages.
