Ganderbal, Feb 25: ‘Go Green Sonamarg’, in collaboration with the Sonamarg Development Authority (SDA) and the Tourism Department are tirelessly working to make the tourist resort free of polythene waste.
Chief Coordinator of Go Green Sonamarg, Riyaz Ahmad highlighting the urgent need for environmental preservation in the face of escalating pollution concerns. “Our mission is clear: to protect the natural beauty of Sonamarg for generations to come,” Ahmad told Rising Kashmir.
Sonamarg, renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, lush meadows, and snow-capped peaks, has long been a magnet for tourists seeking solace in nature’s embrace. However, the surge in tourism has brought with it a surge in plastic waste, threatening the fragile ecosystem of the region.
Ahmad emphasized the collaborative nature of the initiative, stressing the importance of partnership with local authorities and community involvement. “We cannot achieve this goal alone. It requires a concerted effort from all stakeholders, including residents, businesses, and tourists,” Ahmad said.
He urged locals not to put garbage on the banks of Nallah Sindh or on the roads.
The comprehensive plan includes awareness campaigns, community clean-up drives, and the implementation of eco-friendly alternatives to plastic products. Additionally, stringent measures will be put in place to regulate the use and disposal of plastic within the region.
“We envision a future where Sonamarg shines as a beacon of environmental stewardship, inspiring other regions to follow suit,” Ahmad declared, exuding confidence in the success of the endeavour.
