Srinagar, April 27: Department of Minimal Access and General Surgery, GMC Srinagar on Saturday organized the 2nd surgical electives competition to sensitize MBBS students about common surgical disorders and their management with special emphasis on the laparoscopic treatment.
Head Department of Surgery, GMC Srinagar Prof. (Dr) Iqbal Saleem Mir said the idea of the elective posting is that they introduce students to newer technologies, techniques and surgical procedures etc. at a very young age.
“Once we do that, it encourages them to choose a path of their liking. They understand what disease they would like to treat and understand the treatment part,” he said.
Prof. Iqbal said through such programs the young doctors would understand how patients are treated and how and when they can be sent back to their home post treatment at the earliest.
“We are working to take them (doctors) young so that they take the path that we have treaded for a long period of time and they will certainly benefit the patients” he said. He also appreciated the presentations of the students that enthralled the faculty members and young doctors.
He thanked the administration of GMC Srinagar including Principal GMC Srinagar Prof. Iffat and other concerned stakeholders for their support for this wonderful initiative.
Prof. Iqbal said that they hope that programs will continue in future also adding that these programs are going to improve the surgical department and after all the patients will be the main benefactors.
While talking about the students who do not make it to the medical colleges, he advised them this is not the end of the world and they can explore and excel in other options.
Earlier this year, for the first time, work in laparoscopy/thoracoscopy (rare laparoscopic surgery) conducted at GMC Srinagar was selected for presentation in Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) annual conference 2024.
“All the gastrointestinal surgeons from the USA and across the world attended the conference. I am happy to represent GMC Srinagar, Kashmir and the country at such an important stage,” said Dr Rishab, a second year PG student of the department of surgery.
Another young MBBS student of GMC Srinagar Sakshi Rajput said the 2nd surgical elective competition was a stage of learning for students and a great platform for the young doctors.
Among the dignitaries Prof. Shoukat Kadla HOD Gastroenterology, Prof. Salim Khan HOD SPM, Prof. Sajjad Nazir HOD Urology, Prof. Abdul Rashid HOD paediatric Surgery and other senior faculty were present.
