The Department of General Surgery at GMC Baramulla made a significant breakthrough in the field of colorectal cancer surgery, performing its maiden laparoscopic-assisted Low Anterior Resection on a 65-year-old female with Adenocarcinoma of rectum.
The surgery, which is an advanced minimal access procedure, is only performed in a few tertiary care hospitals in J&K, making this a noteworthy achievement for the department.
The Surgery was done by Dr H.Vaqar (Head Department of General surgery Govt. Medical College Baramulla , Dr Shakeeb Lone(Asst. Prof), Dr Mir Mushtaq(Consultant)and Dr Zuneera(SR).
The patient is recovering well in the post-operative period, and the expenses of the surgery were covered under PMJAY.
Despite the limitations faced by an institution in its infancy, the Department of General Surgery is making all efforts to offer regular onco surgery services to the public.
The anaesthesia team led by Dr Fayaz Munshi and Dr Tahira deserves special thanks for making this possible, along with the OT technicians who provided all the help ,Dr Zaffar Kawoosa, the gastroenterologist, also deserves thanks for timely referral of the patient.
Overall, this case showcases the dedication and expertise of the medical professionals at GMC Baramulla.
