High-end implants provided free under PMJAY   Anantnag, Sept 22: The Department of Orthopaedics at GMC Anantnag successfully performed a complex Revision Total Hip Replacement on a patient suffering from a painful hip condition secondary to previous surgery. This represents a major achievement for the hospital, which has carried out 45 total hip and knee replacement surgeries over the past 10 months. The surgery was performed by Dr Tabish Tahir Kirmani, Assistant Professor of Orthopaedics, along with Dr Vikas, DNB scholar, and assisted by OT staff Adil and Jasia, and MTS Nisar Ahmad. The anaesthesia team was led by Dr Anjum Shamim, HOD Anaesthesia, along with Dr Zafar Malik, Chief Anaesthetist, and Jaffar. Total hip replacement is a surgery in which a damaged hip joint is replaced with an artificial one to reduce pain and improve mobility. Total knee replacement involves replacing a worn-out knee joint with a prosthetic to relieve pain, correct deformities, and enhance movement. Both procedures are typically performed when joints are severely affected by arthritis, injury, or other joint problems. Dr Kirmani said the patient, a 65-year-old, had undergone cemented bipolar hemiarthroplasty for a fractured neck of the femur about two years ago at another centre. “The patient was fine for two years but gradually developed hip pain, difficulty walking, and pus discharge. Investigations confirmed a prosthetic joint infection,” he said. He said that in the first stage, about four months ago, the infected implant was removed, debridement of the hip joint was performed, and an antibiotic cement spacer was inserted to control infection along with antibiotics. “In this second stage, we removed the cement spacer using a special technique called Extended Trochanteric Osteotomy (ETO) of the femur. A long, uncemented Wagner-type femoral stem was inserted, and a cemented cup was placed on the acetabular side. Intraoperatively, the hip was found stable,” Dr Kirmani added. He said that the high-end implants used in the surgery were arranged from New Delhi and provided free of cost under the PMJAY scheme. He extended special thanks to AMRIT, especially Tufail, for arranging the implants not available locally. Dr Kirmani added that GMC Anantnag routinely performs challenging and complex orthopaedic surgeries free of cost under the Golden Card scheme. “We have conducted approximately 45 total hip and knee replacement surgeries in the last 10 months,” he said. Dr Showkat Shifa, Media Coordinator at GMC Anantnag, said Prof. Dr Rukhsana Najeeb, Principal and Dean, congratulated the Department of Orthopedics, led by Dr Younis Kamal, Associate Professor and Head, Dr Nawaz Ahmad Bhat, Assistant Professor, Dr Tabish Tahir Kirmani, Assistant Professor, Dr Murtaza Fazal Ali, Consultant, and the team for successfully performing such challenging cases. “The hospital ensures full support for improved patient care at every level,” he added.
