Anantnag, Sept 29: GMC Anantnag cardiologists have been performing an average of eight to 10 heart procedures daily at the Cath Lab, completing over 1,100 coronary interventions in just five months.

Dr. Showkat Hussain Shah, consultant interventional cardiologist at GMC Anantnag, said, “Patients come from almost all age groups, with most between 30 and 80 years old. Since the Cath Lab opened, we have performed over 1,100 procedures, handling around 8–10 patients every day.”

The Cardiology Department is led by three prominent cardiologists: Dr. Syed Maqbool, Head of the Department, along with Dr. Showkat Hussain Shah and Dr. Shamim Ahmad.

Since its inauguration, the Cath Lab has also handled procedures including primary PCIs, structural heart device closures, intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) insertions, radiofrequency ablations, pacemaker implantations, and advanced calcium modification techniques such as IVL, ROTABLATOR, and ORBITAL.

Dr. Shah said the team of doctors, technologists, nursing staff, and junior residents work around the clock to provide comprehensive care for heart patients.

He added that World Heart Day, observed on September 29, was a fitting occasion to recognize the team’s efforts and the positive impact of the Cath Lab on the community. “We are not just treating diseases; we are giving people back their tomorrow,” he said, urging everyone to maintain heart health through healthy habits, positivity, and compassion.

The department celebrated World Heart Day with a 7 km walkathon from Janglat Mandi to the GMC Dialgam campus, promoting heart health and encouraging a healthy, active lifestyle.

Prof. Dr. Rukhsana Najeeb, Principal of GMC Anantnag, said the department has been actively using occasions like World Heart Day, celebrated since 2000, to raise awareness about heart health. “Heart disease is the leading cause of death, but it is largely preventable. Reducing risk factors such as alcohol use, sedentary lifestyles, and unhealthy habits can significantly lower the number of heart attacks,” she said.
