Jammu, March 11: The Women Empowerment and Development Cell of Government Gandhi Memorial (GGM) Science College marked International Women’s Day with a series of engaging and thought-provoking activities on Tuesday.
Held under the patronage of Prof. (Dr.) Romesh Kumar Gupta, Principal, and the guidance of Prof. Yasmeen Mughal, Convener of the Cell, the event embraced this year’s theme, “Accelerate Action”, highlighting the need for progressive change and gender equality.
Sapna Kotwal, Secretary of the J&K Advisory Board for Development of Pahari Speaking People (now PEG), graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. The programme commenced with a welcome address by Prof. Yasmeen Mughal, who stressed the transformative power of education in empowering women. Prof. (Dr.) Romesh Kumar Gupta lauded the organising committee’s efforts and urged students to actively participate in initiatives promoting gender equality and inclusivity.
A key highlight of the event was a symposium, where ten students from various semesters expressed their views on the theme in Dogri, English, Hindi, and Urdu. This multilingual discourse reflected not only intellectual depth but also linguistic diversity. An art exhibition was also organised, showcasing impressive artwork, posters, and collages created by talented students Mohd. Zaigham Salaria and Ishit Kaur. Postgraduate students from the Department of English also contributed their creative expressions, which received widespread appreciation.
A felicitation ceremony was held to recognise the achievements of meritorious students. Those honoured for excellence in literary and cultural fields included Manmeet Kour, Sumeet Kumar, Chakshu Sharma, Maithly, and Mohd. Ayoub Jan. For fine arts, Mohd. Zaigham Salaria and Ishit Kaur were awarded for their exceptional work. Chief Guest Sapna Kotwal shared her inspiring journey, highlighting the challenges and triumphs of women in leadership roles. She encouraged students to break barriers and work towards a more inclusive and equitable society.
