Ganderbal, July 08: The Gangabal trekking season has begins, starting from the foot of the mountain at an elevation of 12,000 feet above the sea level. This annual trekking is drawing thousands of tourists from across the country to the picturesque region of Gangbal, accessible from ShutkadiSonamarg in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district. The trekking season lasts for 70 days, offering a unique blend of natural beauty and outdoor adventure.
Local tourism has seen a significant boost as a result of this influx of visitors. Many locals have found employment opportunities as trekking guides and support staff. He noted that the tranquility and stunning vistas are what make this destination so appealing to tourists.
Another young trekking guide detailed the typical itinerary for trekkers, which begins on July 1 each year and runs until September 10. Trekkers start their journey in ShutkadiSonamarg, after arriving from Srinagar. They spend the first night at a campsite by the river near ShutkadiSonamarg before embarking on the trek to Gangabal on the second day. The itinerary includes an overnight stay at Veshansar on the third and possibly fourth nights, before concluding the trek in Naranag, Kangan. The entire journey covers approximately 70 kilometers over six days, with trekkers relying on horses to carry their gear and supplies.
The region also attracts local tourists to Gangabal, Veshansar, Gadsar, and Satsar. Foreign tourists have increasingly been visiting in recent years, drawn by the region’s natural beauty and the unique trekking experience. Additionally, the area is popular for fishing, with the Department of Fisheries overseeing and regulating the activity.
