Ganderbal, Sep 03: The presence of monkeys in Ganie Mohallah Fraw Sumbal area of central Ganderbal district has become a major concern for the local residents.
Locals said that for several years now, a significant number of monkeys from the nearby forest have ventured into the village, seeking refuge among the bushes near the powerhouse.
These monkeys have not only intruded into homes but have also caused damage to crops over an extended period, they said.
“We have repeatedly requested the powerhouse authorities to trim the overgrown vegetation, but no action has been taken. This has resulted in daily monkey disturbances,” the locals said, adding that these primates not only harm crops but also pose a threat to fruit gardens and the safety of residents.
The escalating monkey population has left the local community, especially women, children, and the elderly, living in constant fear, making it difficult for them to step outside their homes.
The residents have appealed to the wildlife authorities overseeing the powerhouse to implement measures to control the monkey “invasion”.
