Says initiative aimed at creating awareness among public

Ganderbal, May 9: In an effort to prevent drowning incidents and ensure public safety Ganderbal Police in Kangan have installed warning signboards at several vulnerable locations along the banks of Nallah Sindh in Kangan subdivision declaring the areas strictly prohibited for bathing and swimming.

The move comes amid growing concerns over accidental drownings in rivers, streams and canals especially during the summer season when locals and tourists often visit water bodies for recreation. Earlier yesterday, the Sub-Divisional Administration Kangan had also issued a public advisory urging people to stay away from dangerous riverbanks and avoid risky activities near fast-flowing streams.

According to officials, warning boards have particularly been installed in the Yachama and Thune areas, which are situated close to Nallah Sindh and are considered highly risky zones due to the strong water current and slippery banks. Police personnel erected signboards on trees and at prominent spots surrounding the riverbanks to alert visitors and residents.

Authorities said the initiative is aimed at creating awareness among the public and discouraging people from entering unsafe areas despite repeated warnings issued in the past.

Officials further stated that several tourist attraction spots across the Kangan subdivision have already been declared restricted zones for activities such as swimming, bathing, photography, videography and sitting too close to the edges of streams and rivers.

Among the locations where restrictions have been imposed are Barwullah Waterfall, PDC Canal, Wangath Stream and multiple stretches along Nallah Sindh. Authorities warned that these water bodies carry strong currents and sudden water surges, posing serious risks to visitors.

Police and civil administration officials have appealed to both tourists and locals to strictly follow safety advisories and cooperate with authorities in order to avoid any untoward incidents. They also urged parents to keep children away from dangerous water bodies and advised visitors not to ignore warning signs installed at sensitive locations.
