Ganderbal, Nov 28: The Power Development Department (PDD) in the Ganderbal division is taking proactive measures to address power issues during the harsh winter months by repairing faulty transformers and upgrading transmission lines. Officials are confident that these efforts will ensure uninterrupted electricity for the region.
An official from the Regional Transformer Workshop in Ganderbal revealed that the workshop currently has 106 transformers and around 50 iron poles in stock, along with essential power conductors to meet the demands of the chilly season. “We are prepared to ensure no one faces power-related problems this winter,” the official stated.
Highlighting a significant challenge, the official noted that the division’s power load during winter peaks at 163 MW, whereas the agreement load is only 85 MW — resulting in a substantial gap of 78 MW. This excessive load often causes transformers to burn out, posing a persistent challenge for the department.
“There are approximately 51,000 consumers in Ganderbal, encompassing both domestic and industrial users. Despite the agreement for 85 MW, the demand surges to 163 MW during winter, putting immense pressure on the power infrastructure,” the official explained.
To mitigate these issues, the PDD has streamlined the repair process, ensuring that burnt-out transformers are repaired and reinstalled within a day. “We currently have 106 transformers in stock, ready to be deployed immediately when needed,” the official added.
The PDD urged consumers to be mindful of their electricity usage during winter to prevent overloading the system. “We request consumers to avoid using excess load during peak winter to help maintain a stable power supply,” the official appealed.
