Pulwama, Nov 10: A netball player from Hutmarah village of South Kashmir’s Anantnag district has emerged as a local hero. Pawan Jeet Singh, affectionately known as Gappu, has not only become Captain of the J&K Senior Mixed Netball Team but has also proudly represented India on the international stage.
Pawam’s journey in netball began in 2012, a tale that started on the school courts. Over the years, he honed his skills, earning a coveted spot in the J&K netball team.
His dedication and passion for the sport have been unwavering, evident in his remarkable journey spanning 13 years and marked by the acquisition of an impressive 32 medals.
For the past three years, Pawam has been leading J&K Senior Mixed Netball Team while simultaneously coaching junior mixed netball team, showcasing not just his prowess as a player but also his commitment to nurturing budding talent.
Pawam’s meteoric rise reached new heights when he was selected among the 12 players nationwide to represent India at the Indo–Nepal Mixed Netball Championship 2023.
The trials, held in New Delhi on October 19, 2023, witnessed fierce competition, with only 24 players qualifying for both senior and junior mixed categories.
Pawam’s team emerged unbeaten, securing a resounding victory in the finals against Nepal, with Pawam playing a pivotal role as goal keeper and shooter.
The culmination of this journey was marked by awarding of a gold medal to Pawam and each member of his team.
Behind Pawam’s success stands a pillar of unwavering support – his family. Expressing deep gratitude, Pawam acknowledges the steadfast encouragement from his parents and brother, recognising their pivotal role in fuelling his passion for netball.
Furthermore, he extends his appreciation to the coaches who played a crucial role in his development, including Suhail Khan, Rubyia Jeelani, Mohsin Malik, and Sudesh Yadav.
Alongside Pawan Jeet Singh, another rising star, Irtika Aziz from Gulshanabad, Anantnag, has etched her name in the annals of netball history, showcasing exemplary leadership in the Junior Mixed Netball arena.
Despite her relatively short span in the sport since 2017, Aziz’s meteoric rise is nothing short of remarkable. She not only participated but also led the Indian team to victory in the international championship, earning accolades for her sharp skills and strategic gameplay.
