In a remarkable display of determination and unwavering commitment, Sheetal Devi, a 16-year-old para archer hailing from the remote region of Kishtwar, Jammu and Kashmir, has achieved a historic milestone in her career. Sheetal, despite being physically challenged, made history by clinching gold medals at the prestigious Para Asian Games held in Hangzhou, China.
Sheetal Devi’s journey to success is a testament to her indomitable motivation and dedication. Born without arms, she became the world’s first armless female champion archer, breaking barriers and inspiring countless others with her extraordinary achievements.
Defying all odds and exhibited meticulous prowess and unparalleled strength, Sheetal Devi used her feet to mimic the functions of hands. Her multiple gold medals at the Para Asian Games not only made Jammu and Kashmir, and the entire nation proud but also sent ripples of inspiration worldwide.
Devi has set her sights on the Asian Para Championship and is actively preparing for the event. She aims to secure a medal in the championship, which is set to commence on the November 15. Sheetal is also hopeful of participating and winning in the Paralympics next year.
Speaking about her victory, Sheetal Devi expressed her joy and pride at receiving an overwhelming response from across the country. She had set high expectations for herself and was hopeful of bringing home a medal for her nation.
“Reaching home after winning the medals was out of world experience. I am feeling joyous and proud of receiving the overwhelming response from all over the country,” Sheetal said.
Sheetal believes that with commitment and dedication, anyone can rekindle the spark of success and embark on a journey of accomplishments. She emphasised that no one is born with imperfections, flaws, or limitations and encouraged others to pursue their passions with grit and zeal
“No one is born with imperfection, flaw or limitations. Just that one has to rekindle that spark and work hard towards following passion and accomplishing dreams. One should never lose hope. Always leap on hope and instill a positive attitude in yourself. With grit and zeal one can achieve any success,” Sheetal said.
Apart from being an inspiration to young people, especially girls, Sheetal aspires to inspire her siblings to chase their dreams with dedication and determination. She expressed her desire for her sisters and brother to follow in her footsteps and make her proud.
“I felt great to meet my parents and siblings after returning home with medals. I have two sisters and one brother. I want them to look up to me and follow their passion with dedication and determination. I want them to make me proud also,” Sheetal said.
Sheetal had the honour of meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who congratulated and lauded her for her historic feat. PM Modi described her as an epitome of strength, resilience, and courage, which greatly motivated and encouraged her.
“Kuldeep sir and Abhilasaha mam have a huge role to play in my win. It is because of their efforts that I have won the gold medals for the nation. ” They have pushed me into my practice sessions and efforts,” she said.
