Srinagar, Sep 22: The Directorate of Handicrafts and Handloom (DHH), Kashmir has trained Kashmiri artisans about how to compete at national and global markets. A statement issued here said that the DHH organised a one-day Capacity-Building Programme on Branding and Packaging at the Conference Hall, Exhibition Ground, here Monday. The initiative was conducted under the World Bank-supported Raising and Accelerating MSME Performance (RAMP) scheme, aimed at strengthening the competitiveness of local artisans and weavers. The programme was inaugurated by Director H&H, Kashmir Mussarat Islam, in the presence of Deputy Director Training, Mirza Shahid Ali, and other officers from the Directorate’s Resource Cell. Addressing the gathering, the Director emphasised the critical role of branding and packaging in helping Kashmir’s artisans remain competitive in today’s market. He encouraged participants to form producer companies, which would receive support under RAMP, thereby enhancing collective capacity, product visibility, and market reach. The training was led by expert faculty from the Jammu and Kashmir Entrepreneurship Development Institute (JKEDI), Sheikh Nowsheen and Ajaz A. Mulla, who provided hands-on guidance, case studies, and design strategies to strengthen product identity and market readiness. The programme saw enthusiastic participation from over 100 women artisans, particularly those engaged in GI (Geographical Indications), ODOP (One District One Product), and DEH (Design & Export Hub) products. Participants were introduced to evolving consumer preferences, branding tools, and value-added packaging techniques, aimed at empowering grassroots craft producers to access wider and premium markets. This initiative is part of the Directorate’s ongoing series of capacity-building efforts under RAMP, designed to enhance MSMEs and the artisan community of Kashmir through better product positioning and market access. The Directorate reaffirmed its commitment to provide sustained support to artisan clusters, cooperatives, and entrepreneurs, ensuring sustainable livelihoods and global recognition of Kashmir’s rich craft heritage.
