Srinagar, Apr 8: Fresh snowfall occurred in upper reaches while heavy rain lashed plains on Saturday throwing normal life out of gear across the Kashmir division. Due to inclement weather the vehicular traffic on Mughal Road and Srinagar-Jammu national highway was suspended following massive landslides along the road.
Director MeT Srinagar, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad told Rising Kashmir that heavy rains lashed plains and very light snowfall occurred in higher reaches on Saturday.
“The ongoing wet spell will continue till 30th April. The higher reaches including Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Bandipora, Kupwara, and Shopian experienced light snowfall, while rains continued in plains in both the divisions,” he said.
Dr Mukhtar said that from 28-29th April, it will be generally cloudy with light to moderate Rain/Snow (light snow over higher reaches) at most places. With possibility of thunder, lightning and hailstorm, gusty winds at few places of Jammu & Kashmir.

“On 30th April, weather will remain generally cloudy with light rain with thunder at many places. Overall, on and off rainfall is expected in Jammu and Kashmir for next couple of days,” he said.
Dr Mukhtar advised farmers to suspend farm operations and said that there is likelihood of temporary disruption of surface transportation over a few higher reaches during April 30th.

The rains also caused havoc in Srinagar city and its outskirts with rain water entering residential and commercial premises in the low-lying areas.
Meanwhile authorities on Saturday stopped traffic movement on Srinagar-Jammu national highway due to bad weather conditions.
A traffic police spokesman said due to slippery conditions at Dalwas, Mehar and Hingani besides road shrinking due to mudslide at Dalwas prompted them to close the highway for vehicular movement.
“Commuters are advised to avoid travel on the highway and seek proper road status from Traffic Control Units of Ramban and Udhampur before starting their journey.
“Along multiple places on NH-44, slippery conditions of road at Dalwas, Mehar, Hingani. At Dalwas mudslide has shrunken the road. Commuters are requested to avoid travel on NH-44 or seek road status from TCU Ramban/Udhampur before starting their journey,” he said.
Subject to fair weather and good road conditions on Sunday, LMVs Passenger/Private Cars shall be allowed from both sides on Jammu-Srinagar NHW viz Jammu towards Srinagar and vice-versa. However, HMVs shall be managed in a regulated manner after assessing the road condition.”, he said.
