Srinagar, Apr 09: The ongoing two-lane widening of the Baramulla-Uri highway has become a major cause of concern for commuters and local residents, who allege that frequent road closures are disrupting daily life and causing significant inconvenience.

Residents said the highway is being shut down for a few hours at least twice a week due to landslides at multiple locations, making travel unpredictable and time-consuming. The situation, they added, has particularly affected students, office-goers, and patients who rely on the route for essential travel.

“Almost every other day, we hear that the road has been closed due to landslides. It has become a routine now, and we are the ones suffering,” said Shafiq Ahmad, a local resident from Uri. “Students miss their classes, employees reach offices late, and patients face serious risks due to these delays.”

Commuters said traffic is often halted for hours, while at times vehicles are diverted through alternative routes that are significantly longer, adding to travel time and expenses.

“Sometimes we are stuck on the road for hours without any prior information. If diverted, the alternate route takes much longer, which is frustrating,” said Bashir Ahmad, a commuter. “There seems to be no proper planning to manage traffic during the construction work.”

Locals have also questioned the working style of the executing agencies, alleging that multiple stretches of the highway have been dug up simultaneously, contributing to the recurring disruptions.

“They have dug up the road at several places at once, which increases the chances of landslides and closures. Work should have been carried out in a phased manner,” said a government employee who works in Baramulla. “Right now, it feels like there is no coordination.”

According to locals, frequent closures are reported at spots such as Nand Singh Bridge, Rajarwani, Mohra, and Danka Mod.

Residents have urged the authorities to streamline the construction process and ensure better traffic management to minimise inconvenience to the public.

However, officials overseeing the work said they are ensuring smooth movement of traffic on the highway. “Landslides do occur on the highway, but the affected stretches are cleared immediately to restore traffic movement,” an official said.
