Srinagar, Feb 25: A four-day national training programme on natural farming was inaugurated at the Directorate of Extension, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST), Kashmir, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India
The programme, according to a press release issued here, is aimed at promoting sustainable farming practices and strengthening the knowledge and skills of agricultural experts in the field of natural farming.
Vice Chancellor SKUAST K Prof Nazir Ahmed Ganai has played a pivotal role in the establishment and development of the Centre for Natural Farming at the university, the university said, adding that under his leadership, SKUAST Kashmir has been designated as one of the fourteen key centres for natural farming across India.
In her inaugural address, Prof Raihana Habib Kanth, Director Extension, SKUAST Kashmir, emphasised the need to achieve excellence in the field by working in mission mode. She underscored the significance of natural farming for ensuring long-term sustainability in agriculture while promoting environmental preservation.
The event also saw key contributions from distinguished participants including Prof Purshottam Singh, Professor of Agronomy, Prof Parmeet Singh, Associate Director Research and Prof Farahanaz Rasool, Deputy Director Trainings, who elaborated on the various facets of the natural farming concept and its application in contemporary agricultural practices.
The training is being attended by programme coordinators, scientists from KVKs (Krishi Vigyan Kendras), and experts from the Directorate of Extension. This diverse participation is aimed at enhancing the reach and impact of natural farming techniques across the region.
The four-day programme will cover a range of topics, including soil health management, water conservation, organic input production, and the promotion of environmentally friendly farming methods. The training sessions are expected to empower agricultural professionals with the necessary knowledge and skills to foster sustainable farming practices in their respective regions.
