Kulgam, March 08: Special Forest Division, Kulgam on Wednesday said it planted two lakh saplings in this south Kashmir district, with the goal of reaching 2.69 lakh plantlets.
Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Special Forest Division Kulgam, Syed Wasim, told Rising Kashmir that they will plant 2.69 lakh saplings as part of the “Green J&K” drive.
“The department has so far planted 1.8 lakh saplings throughout the district,” he said, adding that the goal for this season is to plant 2.69 lakhs by March 30.
The DFO Kulgam said that to carry out the Green J&K mission, the department has organised a series of plantation drives which have also taken place in various institutions.
The department in Kulgam has three nurseries where these plants are produced – Hitech (HT) Central Plant Nursery, SC Nursery Kulgam, SC Nursery Chambgund, and Avil Nursery Veshow. Deodar, Kail and Broad leafed are the most commonly grown plants.
The Kulgam Forest Division planted 1,39,185 saplings during the fiscal year 2021-22.
Meanwhile, a first-of-its-kind initiative – Forest Darbar – was started here which was spearheaded by the Conservator of Forests (CoF) for South Circle Irfan Ali Shah.
The initiative was launched to listen to the legitimate demands of the forest employees and respond to them in a timely manner, an official said.
He said all forest department employees up to the level of Range Officer work in difficult conditions and away from habitations which exposes them to certain dangers. “The forest darbar will attempt to address these issues,” the official said.
