Srinagar, Oct 26: A foreign terrorist was killed and a major infiltration bid was foiled along the Line of Control (LoC) in Karnah sector of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, police said on Wednesday.
A police spokesman said Police along with Army foiled an infiltration bid in Forward Sudhpora along LoC in Karnah area of Kupwara and one terrorist of proscribed terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT )was killed.
He said based on specific input about possible attempts of infiltration, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by Police, Army (3/8 GR) in Forward Sudhpora area of Karnah Kupwara.
“During the search operation, an infiltrator was challenged by the joint party who started firing indiscriminately upon the joint search party which retaliated leading to an encounter,” the spokesman said.
During the ensuing encounter, one terrorist of proscribed terror outfit LeT was killed and his body was retrieved from the site of encounter.
Police identified slain as Mohammad Shakoor son of Mohammad Yaqoob resident of Syedpora Leepa (PoK).
“Incriminating materials and arms, ammunition including 01 AK-47 rifle (short), 02 AK-47 Magazines, 01 Pistol (9mm), 02 Pistol Magazines, 9mm 45 rounds, 02 Chinese Grenades, Pakistani Currency, Identity Card etc. have been recovered from his possession,” he said.
The spokesman said all the recovered materials have been seized for the further course of investigation and a case under relevant sections of law has been registered at Police Station Karnah.
“Further investigation into the matter is in progress,” he said.
A senior Army officer said based on these inputs the area was kept under constant surveillance.
“Timely action and close coordination between Indian Army, JKP and other Intelligence agencies led to foiling of the infiltration attempt and potential threat to peace in the hinterland, ” he said.
