Srinagar, Apr 17: Amid a surge in terrorist activity in the Pir Panjal region, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Jammu Zone, Bhim Singh Tuti on Thursday said that security forces have significantly enhanced their preparedness to deal with the evolving threat, especially in the border district of Poonch.
Speaking during the Thana Diwas at DPL Poonch, IGP Tuti said the Jammu and Kashmir Police, along with other security agencies, have taken a proactive stance against the rising terror threat, especially in light of recent ambushes and encounters.
“Whatever capacity building was necessary to handle the situation has already been done. And wherever improvement is needed, it will be made,” Tuti assured.
The IGP’s statement comes at a time when terrorists are increasingly targeting vulnerable zones, taking advantage of the dense forests and difficult terrain of Poonch and Rajouri districts. In the last two years, the region has witnessed a series of deadly attacks on both civilians and security forces.
“We are not only prepared for any encounter but are also constantly monitoring infiltration routes and the activities of terror operatives on the ground,” Tuti said.
He further highlighted that intelligence inputs and ground assessments are being used to recalibrate operational strategies, with enhanced surveillance and increased coordination among all agencies.
Tuti emphasized that vulnerable areas are receiving special focus, with forces equipped with updated logistics, technology, and tactical training to neutralize threats efficiently.
“Terrorists are trying to create fear through soft-target strikes, but our security grid is strong, alert, and responsive,” he said.
The IGP called on the public to remain vigilant and support the security forces by reporting any suspicious movement or behavior. “The aim of terrorists is to destabilize peace. But with collective effort and public cooperation, their designs will be defeated,” he added.
In addition to the terror threat, the IGP also flagged the growing challenge of drug abuse in the region, saying it poses a serious social and security concern.
“Drug abuse is hollowing out the future of our youth. While we are committed to tracking and arresting the traffickers, it is equally important for society to step up and keep surveillance on the consumers,” he said.
IGP Tuti urged parents and guardians to keep a close eye on the behavior and activities of their children, and to report any signs of drug use or unusual associations.
“The police can break the supply chains, but it’s the community that can truly break the demand cycle,” he said.
IGP also stressed that strong cooperation between families, educational institutions, and law enforcement agencies is essential to eliminate the menace. He warned that those caught peddling drugs will face strict legal action, including under the stringent NDPS Act.
He called on the public to remain vigilant, not just against terrorism, but also against internal social threats like narcotics, which can destroy families and destabilize society from within.
“Just like terrorism, drug trafficking is an enemy we must defeat together,” he added.
