Ganderbal, March 25: In a decisive effort to uphold food safety standards and protect consumers from potential health hazards, the Food Safety Department of Ganderbal district of Central Kashmir Tuesday carried out a rigorous inspection drive in the Main Gund Kangan market.
The operation, conducted under the directives of Deputy Commissioner Ganderbal and Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Kangan, led to the immediate destruction of expired food items and substandard perishables, alongside the imposition of penalties on non-compliant vendors.
Led by the Designated Officer of the Food Safety Department, the surprise inspections uncovered large quantities of expired edible products, including packaged goods past their expiry dates and spoiled fruits and vegetables. Officials took swift action, disposing of the hazardous items on-site to prevent their circulation in the market. Several food business operators were found in violation of safety regulations and were penalised, with fines amounting to Rs 5,000 levied under the Food Safety and Standards (FSS) Act, 2006 and its associated Rules and Regulations of 2011.
Officials issued a stern warning to all food vendors, particularly those dealing in mutton, poultry, bakery goods, fruits, and vegetables, instructing them to adhere strictly to hygiene protocols and government-approved pricing regulations. Officials emphasised that businesses must comply with safety mandates “in letter and spirit,” cautioning against deceptive practices, negligence, or the sale of expired goods. During the inspection, officials also assessed the overall cleanliness of the market and the storage conditions of perishable items. Vendors were reminded of the importance of proper refrigeration, hygienic food handling and maintaining clean premises to prevent contamination and ensure consumer safety.
Speaking on the occasion, an official from the Food Safety Department stated that such inspections would continue at regular intervals to deter malpractices and safeguard public health. “We are committed to taking strict action against any violations that compromise food safety. Consumers must remain vigilant and report any instances of expired or adulterated food being sold in the market,” the official said.
Local consumers have welcomed the move, urging authorities to conduct such crackdowns more frequently to ensure food quality and hygiene. Meanwhile, vendors have been advised to comply with food safety norms to avoid penalties and legal repercussions.
