Anantnag, Jan 21: To mitigate the deluge threat and enhance the discharge carrying capacity, ‘Flood Protection Works’ has been inaugurated in Anantnag,
The initiative falls under the second phase of the ‘Flood Protection Works’, extending up to 15 kilometers in the Anantnag district.
The cornerstone for the ‘Flood Protection Works on River Jhelum from Batangoo to Sangam Bridge (15.00 kilometers) under Flood Management Programme (FMP) phase 2nd’ was laid by Deputy Commissioner, Anantnag Syeed Fakhrudin Hamid.
The estimated cost for this initiative is 10.0457 crores.
Er Saleem Jhangir Banday, Executive Engineer, Flood Control Anantnag, told Rising Kashmir that ongoing developments within the Flood Control Department in the UT are orchestrated under the leadership of the LG administration, with this initiative being a crucial component of that progress. He said that these projects are being executed under the guidance of Additional Chief Secretary, Shaleen Kabra, Jal Shakti Department.
“The project will raise the carrying capacity of Jhelum from 30,000 cusec to 45,000 cusec at Batangoo. Similarly, it will enhance the carrying capacity of Jhelum at Sangam from 45,000 cusec to 60,000 cusec,” he said.
DC Anantnag said, Jhelum is a lifeline, and this initiative is set to benefit around 17 villages along the Jhelum embankment. The goal is to reduce flood-prone hazards, enhance the town’s aesthetic appeal, and increase its beauty. We are optimistic that the dedicated team will complete the work before the deadline.
He expressed gratitude on behalf of the people of Anantnag to the Lieutenant Governor (LG) for his consistent support and intervention towards development. “During the review meeting last October, LG (sir) specifically focused on such initiatives,” he said.
He said that the protection of Jhelum is as necessary for the people as it is for the government. “Hope that the department will execute the work in the best possible manner.”
