Kulgam, Feb 03: The Medical Superintendent (MS) of District Hospital (DH) Kulgam announced that the hospital successfully performed its first total knee replacement on Monday.
Dr A.G. Raina, MS DH Kulgam, said the surgery was performed on a 65-year-old female patient suffering from Grade IV right knee osteoarthritis, which had severely impacted her daily activities due to intense pain.
He said that the surgery was carried out by Dr Towseef Ahmad Bhat and Dr Danish, assisted by Mr Imtiyaz. The anaesthesia team included Dr Naseer and Mr Shabir Ahmad Shah. The OT staff, including in-charge OT Mr. Ghulam Mohiudin, Imdad Ali, Mr. Muzaffar, Rouf Ahmad, Farooq Ahmad, and Ab Gani, played a crucial role in successfully conducting this surgery for the first time at District Hospital Kulgam.
“We express our gratitude and special thanks to Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kulgam for providing the latest model anaesthesia workstation and to CMO Kulgam for his constant support,” Dr Raina said.
He added that the patient is recovering well post-operation and said that this achievement marks a significant milestone for a peripheral hospital performing such an advanced procedure.
Meanwhile, an official said that the operation was conducted under the PMJAY (Golden Card) scheme, making it free of cost and saving the patient a substantial amount.
