Elderly voters on Wednesday were filled with joy after casting their ballots again in the 2024 assembly elections in the Nageen area of the Hazratbal constituency.
Nearly half a dozen elderly individuals, who have long been involved in strengthening the democratic process, were seen chatting outside the polling booth located near NIT Srinagar.
These elderly voters came from both the Zadibal and Hazratbal constituencies, participating in the voting process, as the polling stations for Srinagar’s two constituencies were located in the same compound, though in different buildings.
Their advanced age was evident in the deep wrinkles on their faces.
Ali Muhammad Mir told Rising Kashmir that the elections were happening after nearly a decade.
“We were involved in politics a long time ago, but now we are facing very difficult circumstances. Development has come to a halt here. The vote today is a stand against the abrogation of Article 370. Recognition, respect—everything has been lost. That’s why we are here to vote, hoping for change,” he said.
He said the reason they came to the polling station on Wednesday was that their children, including their daughters, are sitting at home despite being highly educated. He said they voted to change their future, as there is a lot of unemployment.
Abid Pathan, a younger voter, said that he has seen the frustration in youth about the difficulties in securing jobs.
“There is a proper age when opportunities should come, but I have passed that age and still can’t find a job. I dislike this situation and hope for better development for the youth from the newly elected government,” he said.
“But more important is the future of our youth. That’s very important. After 10 years, this election feels like an opportunity. After the revocation of Article 370, we are seeing elections return. Now, how we choose the right leaders is crucial, and the government is always important.”
Abid further said that Wednesday’s election was vital. He was hopeful that youth would choose wisely and that the representatives who lead the people will do better.
“As a youth, I have always voted, ever since I was an eligible voter. But now I will vote for what is better tomorrow. If things don’t improve, I will hold those responsible accountable,” he added.
