Srinagar, May 12: Darakhshan Andrabi on Monday said drugs are as dangerous for society as guns, stressing the need for collective efforts to eliminate the drug menace from Jammu and Kashmir.
She made the remarks while addressing the “Asluk Aalav” (The Call for Truth) public discourse programme organised in Sopore by the Jammu and Kashmir Development Foundation as part of a social transformation campaign.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Ashok Koul, Bilal Parray, Molvi Waseem Ahmad, Maulana Agha Abbas Rizvi, Advocate Tabassum Rehman and others.
Addressing the gathering, Andrabi said Jammu and Kashmir had suffered from violence for decades and was now facing the growing threat of drug abuse.
“This land was first attacked by guns and now by drugs which are silently destroying our youth. Drugs are as dangerous as guns for society,” she said.
She urged people to support the government’s anti-drug campaign in the same way they supported efforts against terrorism.
Andrabi also appreciated the organisers for conducting awareness programmes across the Valley on social issues including drug abuse, environmental awareness and moral values among youth.
She said people from all sections of society must actively contribute towards creating a positive environment for the younger generation.
The Waqf Board chairperson also lauded the “Drug Free Jammu and Kashmir” campaign launched under the leadership of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and said the initiative had received strong public support across the Union Territory.
