Drug trafficking module busted in Kupwara

Srinagar, Dec 23: In a major crackdown against drug peddlers in the border district of Kupwara, the police arrested 17 people on Friday, including 5 policemen, a contractor, and a political activist and  also seized narcotics worth crores of rupees from their possession.
During a press conference, SSP Kupwara, Yougal Manhas, stated that the large module was involved in drug smuggling near the Line of Control and then supplying it in various parts of Kashmir.
He said, “Working relentlessly to identify and act against the drug paddlers active in the district of Kupwara, the police zeroed in on some drug peddlers active in Kupwara town and its adjoining areas.”
He stated, “On a tip-off, Mohd Waseem Najar, a poultry shop owner and son of Ghulam Mohd Najar, a resident of Darzipura, was arrested with some quantity of narcotics from his residence.”
Following preliminary investigations, Waseem admitted to being a member of a large group of drug peddlers and revealed the names of some of his associates from this district and the Uri area of district Baramulla who were involved in this illegal trade. Subsequent raids were carried out across the district, targeting 16 more people.
The arrested people were identified as, Haroon Rasheed Bhat (SPO) resident of Halmatpora, Irshad Ahmed Khan (SPO) resident of Batpora Hyama, Ishfaq Habib Khan – a political activist Gonipora Hyama, Tahir Ahmed Malik resident of Rigipora, Kupwara, Khursheed Ahmed Khan – dry fruits Shopkeeper and his son Imtiyaz Khan residents of Halmatpora, Tamheed Ahmed Khan ( originally hailing from Keran and now a Pakistan/POK  based terrorist handler) resident of Keran , Roman Mushtaq Bhat resident of Uri, Baramulla, Asif Rashid Hajam resident of Batergam, Kupwara, Sajad Ahmad Bhat (SPO) Bhat resident of Gonipora Hyama, Ab Majeed Bhat ( Police Constable) resident of Kunan Poshpora, Trehgam, Zahid Maqbool Dar (SPO) resident of Kunan Poshpora Trehgam, Abid Ali Bhat Bhat resident of Bohipora Kupwara, Tanveer Ahmad Wani – a contractor, resident of Gulgam Kupwara, Nadeem Javed of Uri Baramulla, and Tahir Ahmad Khan resident of Boniyar, Baramulla were arrested by different teams of Police Station Kupwara headed by SHO Mohd Rafiq Lone and DySP (Prob) Khadim Hussain under the supervision of DySP Hqrs Rashid Younis.,
On the basis of Tahmeed’s confession and disclosure, two packets weighing close to 2.0 kg of heroin narcotic substance have also been recovered from his house.
In this case, FIR No. 283/2022 of Police Station Kupwara is being investigated by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by DySP (Prob) Khadim Hussain.
 It has surfaced during the investigation that a quantity of about 5.0 kg, valued at about Rs 5.0 crore in the market, has been smuggled in from Pakistan by the head of this module, Tahmeed Khan, during the last three months. 
Out of this 5.0 kg of narcotics, about 2.0 kg has been recovered in the instant case, about 1.0 kg has been peddled among drug peddlers and addicts, and about 2.0 kg remains to be traced
