Pulwama, Mar 14: Authorities at District Hospital (DH) Pulwama have sent samples of an intravenous (IV) fluid and an antibiotic for laboratory testing after some post-operative patients allegedly experienced adverse reactions.

Medical Superintendent (MS) DH Pulwama, Dr. Abdul Gani Dar, told Rising Kashmir that 13 patients were admitted in the post-operative ward of the hospital’s gynaecology section.

“Some patients, though not all, experienced mild shivering after being administered the IV fluid and antibiotic,” he said, describing the reaction as a common phenomenon rather than an allergic response.

“There were no rashes or other signs of an allergic reaction,” he added, noting that shivering was observed in only three to four patients.

A team of doctors promptly examined the affected patients. “All patients are stable, and there is no cause for concern,” Dr. Dar said. He further added that samples of the IV fluid and antibiotic have been sent for analysis to confirm their compliance with safety standards.

“The IV fluid and antibiotic in question are supplied by JKMSCL, and we have been using them for the past month without any reported adverse reactions,” he added.

However, some attendants claimed that all patients in the gynaecology ward displayed signs of an adverse reaction after receiving routine medications on Friday morning.

Shabir Ahmad Mir, an attendant, said that the situation caused panic among caregivers, particularly since most of the affected patients had undergone surgery the previous night.

“To prevent any risk to new-borns, they were immediately shifted to another room,” he said.

Another attendant, Afaaq Ahmad Mir, whose wife had delivered a baby the previous night, said that all patients in the ward had been stable until Friday morning.
