Kargil, Jan 27: In a landmark step towards improving emergency services in Ladakh, the Union Territory administration has provided the Drass region of Kargil with its first-ever fire tender.
This development addresses a longstanding demand from the residents of Drass Sub-division, who have frequently raised concerns about the lack of adequate firefighting facilities in the region.
The fire tender was officially inaugurated by Councillor Abdul Wahid in a ceremony attended by local officials and community members. Speaking at the event, Councillor Wahid expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the UT Administration, including the Lieutenant Governor, the Deputy Commissioner of Kargil, and the Chairman/Chief Executive Councillor of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Kargil.
“This fire tender will play a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of the people of Drass,” Councillor Wahid stated. “It enables timely and efficient responses to fire emergencies, which is especially important in a region like ours with its unique geographic and climatic challenges.”
The introduction of a dedicated fire tender is a significant step forward for Drass, which has long grappled with the absence of adequate emergency response services. The remote location of Drass and challenging weather conditions have historically hindered effective disaster management, making this new resource a vital addition to the community’s infrastructure.
Local residents and community leaders have welcomed the move, highlighting its potential to prevent loss of life and property in the event of fire-related incidents. Many believe this is just the beginning of further improvements in emergency preparedness and disaster management in Drass.
Councillor Wahid also urged the administration to provide additional resources and training for local personnel to ensure the effective use of the fire tender. He emphasised the need for ongoing investment in public safety infrastructure, particularly in regions like Drass, where accessibility and severe winters pose significant challenges.
The provision of the fire tender marks a pivotal moment in enhancing the safety and emergency response capacity of Drass. It is expected to inspire further development initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life in the region, reinforcing the UT Administration’s commitment to addressing the needs of its people.
