The recent wildfires in Dachigam Wildlife Sanctuary, particularly in Sharasbal, Mahdev, Khrew, and Tral ranges, have sparked concerns about the well-being of the wild animals residing there. DPAP’s demand for special care and food for these animals is timely, especially on World Wildlife Day.

He said, Dachigam National Park, home to the endangered Hangul (Kashmir Stag), is a vital habitat for numerous Himalayan wildlife species. The park’s diverse flora and fauna, including coniferous forests, alpine pastures, and meadows, support a wide range of wildlife, such as musk deer, leopards, Himalayan black bears, and over 150 species of birds.

Given the sanctuary’s importance, Peer said, “it’s essential for the government to take immediate action to provide food and necessary items to support the wildlife habitat in Dachigam”. This could include:

Emergency Food Supplies: Providing food for the affected animals, especially during the harsh winter months.

Veterinary Care: Offering medical assistance to injured animals and ensuring the overall health of the wildlife population.

Habitat Restoration: Initiating efforts to restore the damaged habitats and ecosystems within the sanctuary.

Peer Bilal said, “By taking these steps, the government can help mitigate the impact of the wildfires on Dachigam’s wildlife and ensure the long-term conservation of this vital sanctuary”
