Doodpathri, also known as the “Valley of Milk,” is a captivating tourist destination in central Kashmir’s Budgam district. It has become a favored spot for both local and non-local tourists to relax and unwind.
Renowned for its scenic beauty, tranquil environment, and unspoiled landscapes, the bowl shaped valley in the Pir Panjal Range of the Himalayas, offers a perfect retreat for those seeking a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Notably, last month the picturesque place had witnessed a massive rush of visitors during the Eid-ul-Adha celebrations, with nearly 70,000 people visiting over the course of four days.
Located approximately 42 kilometers from Srinagar, Doodpathri is a serene and picturesque meadow that offers visitors a peaceful retreat amidst nature’s splendor.
The less-explored place having vast landscapes is surrounded by majestic Pir Panjal mountain range, making it a perfect getaway for nature lovers, trekkers, and adventure enthusiasts.
As one reaches Doodpathri, the breathtaking mountains, forests, and green pastures come into view, mesmerizing tourists and visitors alike with the unending green valleys.
Following the increase in tourist arrivals, Doodpathri has created employment opportunities for numerous men and women. Men stay busy with horse riding, guiding tourists, and engaging in various other activities, while women have set up stalls and sell tea along the scenic pathways of Doodpathri.
Among them is Rubeena Banu, who prepares crispy fried Makai Chot (maize flour tortillas) with Noon Chai (salted tea) at a stall in Doodhpathri. Tourist vehicles frequently stop at these modest food stalls run by women.
What makes this place special is that women are at the forefront of these food stalls, in a region where men are usually the hosts. These days they leave their homes in the morning to mesmerize the tourists with local foods.
“The food stall operators appreciate the boost in tourist footfall, bringing them opportunities, though they still lack many facilities. Most women running the Doodhpathri food stalls come from farming households that cultivate maize,” she said.
The name Doodpathri translates to “Valley of Milk,” which is derived from the abundance of milk-like frothy water in the streams flowing through the valley. Legend has it that a saint once prayed here and milk came out from the ground instead of water, hence the name.
The valley is adorned with lush green meadows, dense forests of deodar and pine, and pristine streams that add to its enchanting beauty. The calm and unpolluted environment, coupled with the breathtaking landscape, makes Doodpathri a haven for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life.
One of the main attractions of Doodpathri is its stunning landscape. The vast meadows are covered with a carpet of vibrant wildflowers during the spring and summer months, creating a riot of colors that is a feast for the eyes.
The undulating terrain of the meadows is perfect for leisurely walks, picnics, and camping. The cool breeze, the sound of the flowing water, and the panoramic views of the surrounding mountains provide a sense of tranquility and relaxation.
Over the years, local youth have increasingly preferred Doodpathri for camping, staying for days to weeks, because other places like Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonmarg are often crowded with tourists.
“Doodpathri is also a paradise for adventure enthusiasts. The valley offers numerous trekking routes that cater to both beginners and experienced trekkers,” said Waseem Ahmad, from Srinagar, who had installed a tent there a week ago.
Officials of Doodpathri Development Authority said the government aims to transform Doodhpathri into a year-round tourist destination and has implemented various measures to boost tourism. Last year, the spot attracted a record-breaking number of visitors, with over three million people visiting throughout the year.
One of the popular trekking routes is the Doodpathri to Tangnar trek, which is a moderate trek offering splendid views and a chance to explore the untouched beauty of the region.
For those interested in experiencing the local culture, Doodpathri provides an opportunity to interact with the local Gujjar and Bakarwal communities.
These nomadic tribes are known for their unique lifestyle and hospitality. Visitors can learn about their traditional ways of life, sample their cuisine, and even stay in their traditional huts for an authentic cultural experience.
Doodpathri is also a great spot for fishing and angling. The crystal-clear streams are home to a variety of trout, making it a popular destination for fishing enthusiasts. The serene environment and thrill of fishing in cold waters of streams add to the charm of Doodpathri.
Despite its natural beauty and potential as a tourist hotspot, Doodpathri remains relatively unexplored and uncommercialized. This is primarily due to its limited accessibility and the lack of extensive tourist infrastructure.
However, this also means that the valley has retained its pristine and untouched charm, making it an ideal destination for those seeking solitude and a connection with nature.
As tourism infrastructure develops, Doodpathri has the potential to become one of the premier tourist destinations in Jammu and Kashmir, offering visitors an unforgettable experience in the lap of nature.
Visitors to Doodpathri often describe it as a hidden paradise in Kashmir. Many are captivated by the valley’s untouched beauty, praising its lush green meadows, dense forests, and crystal-clear streams.
Tourists often mention the serene and tranquil environment, noting how absence of commercialization enhances the natural charm of the place. The cool, refreshing breeze and views of Pir Panjal mountain range are often highlighted as unforgettable aspects of their visit.
Doodhpathri has no permanent settlement and is inaccessible during winter due to heavy snowfall. In summer shepherds from the plains of district Budgam bring cattle for grazing and remain at Doodhpathri seasonally for about six months.
