Srinagar, Oct 04: To enhance traffic mobility and reduce congestion in the city, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Anshul Garg, on Saturday chaired a high-level meeting with key stakeholder departments to review ongoing and proposed measures aimed at decongesting major and interior roads in Srinagar. The meeting was attended by Vice Chairpersons of LCMA, SDA, SSP Traffic Srinagar, ADC Srinagar, Chief Engineer R&B, Joint Commissioner SMC, and representatives from Wildlife, Transport, and JKRTC. Discussions centred on developing multi-level parking facilities at strategic locations, widening Boulevard Road, establishing smart city charging infrastructure, operationalising ITMS cameras and traffic signals, regulating E-Rickshaws, and framing policies for the influx of used vehicles. During the meeting, Garg emphasised the urgency of accelerating the creation of multi-parking facilities, especially in high-density areas such as Nishat, Shalimar Bagh, Jama Masjid, Sanat Nagar, Bemina, and Batamaloo. The widening of Boulevard Road was also deliberated upon as a measure to ease traffic pressure, improve tourist and local movement, and facilitate the introduction of one-way traffic from Dalgate to Nehru Park. Additionally, the possibility of implementing one-way traffic on selected interior roads was discussed, with a pilot project planned to evaluate its effectiveness before broader rollout. Further, the development of charging infrastructure for electric buses under the Smart City initiative was reviewed to prevent bunching and improve public transport efficiency. Divisional Commissioner directed Srinagar Smart City Limited (SSCL) to adhere strictly to timelines for the installation of traffic lights and ITMS cameras at 66 key junctions. He also urged private landowners along Boulevard Road to collaborate with the administration by providing land for parking on a tripartite basis. Other key initiatives include regulating e-rickshaws, demarcating ‘No-Go Zones’ to reduce congestion, and formulating policies to control the increasing number of used vehicles entering the Kashmir Valley. To ensure effective implementation, Garg directed all departments to categorise measures into short-term, mid-term, and long-term actions, emphasising inter-departmental coordination and strict adherence to deadlines. He also stressed the importance of removing bottlenecks across key corridors and urged collective efforts to improve Srinagar’s urban transport system.
