Srinagar, Dec 19: Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Vijay Kumar Bidhuri, conducted a comprehensive visit to the under-construction Government Medical College (GMC) at Chogal in Handwara. The visit comes after heavy floods earlier this year inundated the site, prompting the administration to explore alternate locations for the medical college.
Speaking to reporters, Bidhuri confirmed that the government has formed a team of officials to oversee the relocation of the GMC project. He acknowledged the growing resentment among locals due to the changes but assured that efforts are underway to find a suitable site for its completion. “We are committed to ensuring the timely construction of the medical college and addressing key challenges like accommodation and the shortage of doctors,” he said.
Bidhuri also emphasized winter preparedness, assuring that the administration is focused on improving arrangements compared to the previous year. “Daily reviews are being conducted to ensure smooth operations and to tackle potential challenges during the winter season,” he added.
In addition to his focus on winter preparations, Bidhuri highlighted the importance of key events in the valley, including the Khelo India Games and the Bungus Festival. He assured that senior officials are closely monitoring these initiatives to ensure they contribute to the region’s development and tourism promotion.
Regarding the Khelo India Games in Gulmarg, Bidhuri expressed optimism, stating that despite snowfall disruptions last year, the administration is confident that the games will proceed as planned this time. He also praised the Bungus Festival as a significant eco-tourism opportunity in Kupwara, noting the potential of the region to attract more visitors and boost local tourism.
With preparations in full swing, the Divisional Commissioner assured that both the GMC relocation and major events would be handled with efficiency, contributing to the overall development of the Valley.
