Srinagar, March 15: The Jammu and Kashmir Government Saturday announced that the District Committee of Kupwara has approved a proposal under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakaram (PMJVK) to enhance sports infrastructure in the district.
The plan includes the development of an Indoor Stadium in Karnah and a Playfield in Gomal Tangdar, with the relevant revenue authorities working to identify suitable land and process the necessary documentation. Responding to an inquiry from MLA Karnah Javid Ahmad Mirchal, the Minister for Youth Services and Sports (YS&S) highlighted that the youth of Karnah constituency are actively engaged in various sports, receiving training across multiple institutions. The minister also emphasised the government’s commitment to expanding sports facilities, citing the utilisation of existing grounds in Teetwal and Chamkoot, as well as the development of playfields under the UT Capex scheme with an investment of Rs. 12.37 lakh.
With 11,915 students and 3,649 non-school participants already engaged in sports activities at various levels, the initiative aims to provide better opportunities for young athletes, enabling them to compete at district, divisional, and national levels. The government is actively exploring further avenues to enhance sports infrastructure in the district.
