Srinagar, Oct 15: The Director of Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) and Principal of SKIMS Medical College, Prof. M. Ashraf Ganie, welcomed a new batch of 125 medical students for the academic year 2024-25 in a formal ceremony held on Tuesday. The event marked the beginning of their journey at one of the country’s top medical institutes after successfully passing a rigorous national-level entrance exam.
In his address, Prof. Ganie congratulated the students for their hard work and dedication. He encouraged them to uphold the ethical values of the medical profession and the reputation of SKIMS Medical College. He praised the contributions of the institution in the health sector and acknowledged the role of the faculty in shaping the future of medicine in the region.
Prof. Ganie also expressed pride in the achievements of SKIMS Medical College alumni, who have excelled in various medical fields and brought recognition to the institution.
Dr. Ajaz A Rather, Department of Surgery, traced the history of the college, emphasizing its contributions to patient care and academics since its inception in 1989. Senior faculty members, including Prof. Sheikh Sajad, Medical Superintendent Dr. Shifa Deva, and Prof. Ashfaq, Head of Social and Preventive Medicine (SPM), stressed the importance of discipline, punctuality, and maintaining the institution’s legacy.
As part of the ceremony, the students took the Hippocratic Oath, administered by Dr. Beenish from the Department of SPM, pledging to uphold the ethical standards of the medical profession. An informative session on anti-ragging policies followed, with experts guiding students on the do’s and don’ts of ragging and introducing them to the SKIMS MC redressal committee.
An anti-ragging poster competition was also held, with awards presented to the top participants. Winners included Sheikh Aiman, Junaid Ahmad Baba, Syed Rimsha Andrabi, and Dania Tehseen, all from the 2021 batch.
The event, organized by the SKIMS Medical College team, was led by Dr. Sajad Rather as Organizing Chairman and Dr. Ashfaq as Organizing Secretary, with additional contributions from Dr. Beenish and Dr. Anzeela.
