Srinagar, Apr 16: Director Sericulture Jammu and Kashmir, Ajaz Ahmad Bhat on Tuesday conducted a thorough inspection of the ongoing upgradation works at the Silkworm Seed Unit and Mulberry Nurseries/Farms in Vijpara in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district.
These initiatives are crucial steps towards achieving self-sufficiency in silkworm seed production and improving the propagation of mulberry plants across the region, the department said in a statement issued here.
During the visit, Bhat assessed the progress of the upgradation works, which are being carried out under the Capex Budget. With an estimated cost of Rs 45 lakh, Rs 36 lakh has already been allocated, and Rs 25 lakh expended for the purpose.
Addressing the gathering, the Director highlighted the significance of revamping mulberry nurseries and farms for the cultivation of improved varieties of mulberry plants. “These nurseries play a pivotal role in providing abundant leaf reserves for silkworm rearing,” he said, adding that preparations are underway to introduce more poly house cuttings and root grafts of exotic and improved mulberry varieties for the upcoming rearing season.
Upon completion of the upgradation works at the Seed Unit in Vijpara, Hajan, Bandipora, the production capacity is expected to reach 20,000 Double Hybrid F1 Silkworm Seeds (DFLs), Bhar informed. These seeds will be distributed among silkworm rearers in nearby villages, thereby significantly boosting silk production in the region, he added.
Expressing optimism about the project’s potential, Bhat emphasised its role in uplifting the sericulture sector and creating economic opportunities for local communities. He urged field functionaries to work diligently towards doubling the production of quality silkworm seeds and cocoons. He stressed the importance of providing assistance to silkworm rearers and farmers at every stage of the process, ensuring a conducive and disease-free environment for silkworm rearing.
The Director Sericulture also inspected the Mulberry Block at H.M.T and directed the District Sericulture Officer, Srinagar, to prioritize the maintenance and pruning of mulberry plants, along with ensuring cleanliness and hygiene to revamp the block promptly.
Accompanying him were the Development Officer, ISDP Sonawari, and other departmental officers. In addition to his field activities, Bhat presided over a condolence meeting at the Directorate of Sericulture Dev. Department J&K, TulsiBagh, Srinagar, to honour the memory of the late employee, Bindroo. A two-minute silence was observed and Bhat directed concerned officials to expedite the processing of documents to alleviate the suffering of the deceased employee’s family.
