Pulwama, April 07: As Eid ul Fitr approaches, the demand for Rajpora Sheermal has surged in the market across South Kashmir’s Pulwama district.
This traditional flat, circular bread, adorned with sesame seeds and boasting a crisp exterior yet soft and tender interior, holds a cherished place in the hearts and palates of many Kashmiri families.
In the historic village of Rajpora, around 25 bakers keep the centuries-old tradition of Sheermal making alive.
Manzoor Ahmad, a third-generation baker, emphasised the significance of Sheermal during Eid, stating that families across Kashmir consider it a must-have delicacy for the festivities.
The preparations for Sheermal begin well in advance, with bakers like Sofi and his family members toiling ceaselessly from the 20th of Ramadhan as orders pour in.
Each step of the meticulous production process, from kneading dough in large wooden boxes to tending to fiery clay ovens, reflects the craftsmanship honed over generations.
Manzoor highlighted Sheermal’s widespread appeal, noting that demand extends far beyond local boundaries. “Orders stream in from the Kashmiri diaspora in Saudi Arabia, the United States, and other countries. Even within India, enthusiasts from metropolitan hubs like Delhi and Mumbai eagerly seek out the authentic taste of Rajpora Sheermal.”
As Eid draws near, the streets of Rajpora buzz with anticipation. Eager Sheermal enthusiasts queue outside bakery shops, drawn by the tantalizing aroma of freshly baked bread. For them, Sheermal isn’t just a culinary delight; it’s a connection to their cultural heritage, a tangible link to generations past.
Yasir Ahmad Dar from Ashmander village of Pulwama attested to the allure of Rajpora Sheermal, purchasing a substantial quantity for his friend from Ganderbal district. Yasir praised the Sheermal’s taste and longevity, noting its ability to be stored for up to a month.
Similarly, Rizwan from Zanapora area of Shopian expressed his appreciation for the delicacy, purchasing a significant amount to serve during Eid festivities.
Manzoor revealed that around 300 quintals of Sheermal are sold on Eid days in Rajpora, with each baker experiencing a surge in sales.
