A Delhi court is expected to decide on Thursday whether the terror funding case against Jammu and Kashmir Lok Sabha member Engineer Rashid should be transferred to the designated MP/MLA court now that he is a lawmaker.
The court will also rule on his regular bail application.
Earlier, the judge had noted that the case might be moved to a special court designed to handle cases involving lawmakers. Rashid, elected from the Baramulla constituency in the recent Lok Sabha elections, has been in Tihar jail since 2019 after being arrested by the NIA in a 2017 terror funding case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
The judge had previously reserved the bail order, stating that the jurisdiction issue needed to be addressed before deciding whether to transfer the case.
Rashid had surrendered to Tihar jail authorities on October 28 after his interim bail period ended.
On September 10, the court granted him interim bail to allow him to campaign in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections, deferring the decision on his regular bail plea. His interim bail was extended until October 28 due to his father’s ill health, and the NIA did not oppose the extension after verifying documents. (KNS)
