Claimed to be first Kashmiri-language video song screened in a local cinema
Srinagar, May 5: A video song by an eighth-grade student was premiered at INOX cinema Srinagar on Tuesday, drawing a large audience from different walks of life.
The debut track, titled “Deedar’as Praran Chuss,” has been sung by 14-year-old Rehaan Farooq, a resident of a remote village in the Tangmarg area of north Kashmir.
It is claimed to be the first video song by a Kashmiri artist to be screened in a cinema hall in Kashmir’s history and that too in the local language.
The song is a devotional Kashmiri folk composition rooted in spiritual depth and cultural heritage. Its lyrics, penned by Sheikh Shabaan, reflect the essence of Kashmiri Sufi expression.
Originally created and performed by Rashid Jahangir, the track has been reimagined in this version by Rehaan Farooq ft Mehreen Malik.
While preserving the soul of the original, the rendition brings a fresh voice to the composition. The music has been composed by Arif Mir.
The video narrates a story of self-discovery, following a young dreamer who begins with a small vision, evolves through his craft, and ultimately returns with a strong sense of identity and purpose as an artist.
The song has been presented by Mashq Records in association with Athwas Retail and co-presented by Sheen Productions.
Speaking to Rising Kashmir, Rehaan Farooq said the journey was challenging but rewarding. “The entire team groomed me before the project, which helped me deliver my performance on screen. It has come out as a meaningful product,” he said.
Kashmiri singer Mehmeet Syed, who was also present on the occasion, said that those in a position to support young artists should come forward. “Whether it is corporate houses or others, such support can help nurture and boost emerging talent,” she added.
Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Akshay Labroo, who attended the screening, praised the effort. “The video beautifully captures village life. The young singer has performed exceptionally well. I hope the song does well,” he said.
Referring to the growing recognition of Kashmiri singers, he added, “Songs by Kashmiri artists in Bollywood have recently gained wide popularity. I believe talents like Rehaan will soon make a mark in the industry. The government is committed to supporting such artists.”
MLA Lal Chowk Ahsan Pardesi said the young singer has a bright future ahead. “He is blessed with a melodious voice, and his performance is truly captivating. I am spellbound by the way the song has been sung and picturized - it is remarkable. There may be a shortage of platforms, but there is certainly no shortage of talent in Kashmir. We are hopeful that he will perform on a national platform one day,” he said.
He added that the government should also play a role in promoting such cultural talent. “However, there are certain limitations on the government’s side. That is why I urge private organisations to come forward and support these young artists,” he said.
