Srinagar, Sep 26: Cluster University Srinagar organised an extension lecture by Prof. Geeta Singh, Director at the Centre for Professional Development in Higher Education, University of Delhi on Tuesday.
The lecture was held at Govt. College for Women, M.A. Road, Srinagar and was presided over by Vice Chancellor, Cluster University Srinagar, Prof. Qayyum Husain. Faculty members and students attended the lecture. Others present on the occasion included Dean Academic Affairs, Prof. Mushtaq Ahmad Lone, Controller of Examinations, Dr. Khurshid Ahmad Mir, Dean Sciences, Dr. Naseer Hussain Shah, Dean Social Sciences, Dr. Nazir Ahmad Kotey and Dean Humanities & Liberal Arts, Prof. Deeba Sarmad.
Prof. Geeta spoke extensively about the role of women in nation building. Referring to the central role of women in the society, she said, “As a mother, a woman is the first teacher of a child and shapes the personality of citizens of a nation.”
Prof. Geeta referred to some prominent women personalities from Kashmir including Lal Ded who is revered by people from all religions. She termed the successful Mission Chandrayaan as a living example of women’s power. “In this mission, many women scientists & engineers were directly involved in it,” Prof. Geeta said.
Similarly, she referred to the contribution of women in Mission Mangal. She also referred to the historic women reservation bill passed recently in the parliament and termed it as a major step towards gender equality.
Prof. Geeta said the push for using mother tongue in education under the National Education Policy (2020) is quite significant. “Although India has rich diversity of languages, they were seen as a sign of backwardness, and those who could not speak English were neglected and their talents were not recognized. When the students are confident in a language, their skills and talent will emerge without any hindrance,” she said, adding that NEP-2020 advocates imparting education in regional Indian languages.
Earlier after welcoming and felicitating the guest, Vice Chancellor, Prof. Qayyum Husain referred to the contribution of Prof. Geeta Singh in higher education sector. He also referred to the importance of women in every field of life.
