CUK’s Law Deptt organises students’ visit to JJB

Ganderbal, June 8: Department of Law, School of Legal Studies (SLS), Central University of Kashmir (CUK), organised a visit for the students of BA.LLB 9th semester to the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB), Budgam.
According to the department, the purpose was to give the students an insight into the functioning of the Juvenile Justice System and make them understand the Board’s role in rehabilitating and reintegrating children in conflict with Law, into the society.
The Board members provided an overview about their mandate, functions, and procedures, to the students. They highlighted the principles, and legal framework governing the treatment of children in conflict with the law, and explained the mandate and the role of the Board in safeguarding the rights and welfare of juvenile offenders.
The students observed the ongoing proceedings in the juvenile court and presentation of evidence. They got an opportunity to analyse juvenile cases, including the social background, offense committed, and rehabilitation plan. They also interacted with the JJB members in particular with Principal Magistrate Mr. Sheikh Gowher, lawyers, and probation officers. They discussed the challenges faced in dealing with juvenile offenders and learned about the rehabilitation and counselling programmes available to them.
“This initiative successfully complimented the theoretical knowledge gained in the classroom, enabling the students to develop a broader perspective on the complexities of the juvenile justice system,” the department said.
Sr. Asst Prof. Dr. Hilal Ahmad Najar and Asst Prof. Dr Imran Ahad were the in charge teachers for the visit.
