CUK’s Law deptt holds workshop on cyber security

Ganderbal, May 30: Department of Law, School of Legal Studies, Central University of Kashmir (CUK) organized a one-day workshop on “Cyber Security,” for the BA.LLB 9th and 6th-semester students at varsity’s Tulmulla Campus here Tuesday.
Speaking on the occasion, Dean SLS and CoE, Prof. Farooq Ahmad Mir gave insights about the history and the development of Cyber Law. He made the participants aware about how the world is changing with the development in the digital world and highlighted the various issues the world is facing to regulate the cyber space and how the IT Act of 2000, from the past 23 years, is acting as the umbrella legislation for regulating the digital world.
In his online address, Senior lawyer, Supreme Court Dr. Pavan Duggal discussed about the Advent of GPT-4 and the legal issues related to it, the rapid increase in Cybercrimes, increasing data breaches, social media cybercrimes, how it is an alarming bell for society to take necessary action for its proper regulation. He also gave insights into the cybercrimes against property, persons and against nations. He pressed on the importance of cyber security and the legal framework to regulate it.
SHO Cyber Police Station, Mr. Reyaz Ahmad in his presentation, deliberated upon various types of cyber frauds and the modus operandi used by the cyber criminals to fleece the general public. He said the number of cybercrimes in Jammu and Kashmir has increased manifold. “The cyber criminals are cheating and hoodwinking the people on social media platforms including facebook, whatsapp and Instagram, extorting huge amount of money from them on one pretext or the other,” he said, adding these criminals work in organised gangs and operate from different parts of the country and across the world. He asked the students to remain cautious while using the social media applications and platforms and strictly barred them from sharing any personal details with strangers, posing as friends on the aforementioned platforms.
Assistant Prof. Deptt of Computer Science & Engineering, NIT Srinagar, Dr. Sparsh Sharma made the students aware about various aspects of cybercrime, which includes ethical hacking, passwords and leaked databases, phishing, email spoofing, steganography, deleted data recovery, CCTV Camera Hacking, Location Tracing, and how to secure our accounts from any cyber-attack.
Advisor, Academic Outreach, Cyber Law University, Adv. Shaakshar discussed the various tactics used by cyber criminals to commit the cybercrime like how cybercrime as a revenue source for the malicious actors and how different platforms allow the hackers to provide their services, which is a huge threat in 2023. He informed the students about the importance of cyber hygiene and cyber safety Mantra and practical tips to safeguard your digital space.
Assistant Professors Mr. Bilal Ahmad Ganaie, Mr. Hilal Ahmad Najar, Dr. Anil Kumar, Mrs. Gulafroz Jan, Dr Reehana Shawl conducted the programme. The rapporteur of the workshop were Dr Imran Ahad, Ms. Insha Yaseen and Fizza Assad.
