Srinagar, Mar 01:CSIR-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine Srinagar is hosting a Three-Days Hands on Training in Natural Products and Medicinal Chemistry under CSIR-Integrated Skill Initiatives. The training program was inaugurated by Dr. Zabeer Ahmed, Director CSIR-IIIM Jammu on Monday.
Participants from different institutions have been selected to undergo training in different facets of Natural Products and Medicinal Chemistry. During the workshop, participants will delve into various techniques involved in the isolation and purification of natural products. These techniques include column chromatography, thin-layer chromatography (TLC), and flash chromatography.
At the onset of the workshop, Dr. Zabeer outlined concerted effort in prevention and treatment of emerging threats to human health and placing natural products at centre of efforts to obtain new therapies. He informed the participants about therapeutic value of compounds found in plants and plant based medicines used in alternate medicine. Dr Zabeer in his message underlined that Natural product chemistry has not only formed the scientific basis for traditional use of medicinal plants, but also plays an important role in drug discovery.
It was revealed to participants on how Natural product synthesis is a captivating field within organic chemistry that focuses on the intricate construction of complex, biologically relevant molecules found in nature. These natural products possess diverse and often remarkable pharmacological activities, making them crucial for drug discovery, agricultural innovation, and the development of novel materials.
Dr. Muzamil Ahmed, Principal Scientist gave an overview of institution and its legacy. The Training Program is being coordinated by Dr Bilal Ahmad, Principal Scientist and Dr Syed Khalid, Scientist under the supervision of Er Abdul Rahim, Head CSIR-IIIM Srinagar (Br.). The inaugural function saw participation of different scientists and scholars of the Institute.
