Bijbehara,Aug 23:In a heartwarming display of inclusivity and sporting prowess, a league match of cricket for players with visual disabilities was organized by the Humanity Welfare Organization Helpline in collaboration with Government Model Higher Secondary School for Boys in Bijbehara, Jammu and Kashmir.
The cricket match, hosted by Ms. Nasreena, the Principal of the Model Higher Secondary School, brought together players from various regions of Jammu and Kashmir, including Kulgam, Anantnag, Shopian, Pulwama, Srinagar, Budgam, and Baramullah. The event was inaugurated by Javed Ahmad Tak, a Padma Shri Awardee and a prominent advocate for the disability sector.
Two teams, Central 11 captained by Showkat Ahmad Lone and South 11 captained by Abid Nayak, competed in a thrilling match. After winning the toss, South 11 elected to bat and managed to score 107 runs. In pursuit of the target, Central 11 struggled and could only muster 60 runs, leading to a victory for South 11 by a margin of 47 runs. Sahil was awarded the title of Man of the Match, while Junaid Bhatti was recognized as the Best Bowler.
The event wasn’t just about the competition; it was a celebration of determination and skill despite facing severe visual disabilities. All the participants were honored with certificates and medals, and the winning and runner-up teams received trophies as well.
Speaking at the event, Javed Ahmad Tak, the Founder Chairman of Humanity Welfare Organization Helpline, expressed his belief in the potential of individuals with disabilities and urged cricket associations to open their doors to cricket clubs comprising youths with diverse disabilities. He also appealed to the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Kumar Sinha, and the Chief Secretary to allocate budgets for cricket tournaments catering to different disabilities.
Ms. Nasreena, the Principal of the school, emphasized the commitment of the educational institution to empower students with disabilities through education, sports, and co-curricular activities. She announced plans to organize quarterly sports events for disabled athletes, fostering inclusion and awareness among the non-disabled student community.
Farooq Ahmad Salroo, the sports teacher, extended gratitude to Humanity Welfare Organization Helpline for its invaluable contribution to promoting inclusivity through sports. The principal of the institution was presented with a memento as a token of appreciation by Showkat Ahmad Lone, the founder of Blind Welfare Trust Srinagar.
The cricket match not only showcased the exceptional sporting talents of individuals with visual disabilities but also underscored the need for a more inclusive approach in the world of sports. The event serves as a powerful reminder that talent knows no boundaries and that determination can overcome any obstacle.
