Srinagar, Oct 28: The CPI(M) has expressed shock over India’s decision to abstain from a UN General Assembly Resolution, titled “Protection of civilians and upholding legal and humanitarian obligations”, calling for a humanitarian truce in the ongoing Israeli offensive in Gaza.
The party in a statement criticised India’s stance, saying that the abstention contradicts India’s historic support for the Palestinian cause. The CPI(M) argued that this move highlights India’s alignment with US imperialism and the Modi government’s efforts to strengthen the US-Israel-India alliance.
As the UN General Assembly overwhelmingly passed the resolution, Israel intensified its air and ground attacks in Gaza, even cutting off all communications in the region, home to 2.2 million Palestinians, it said.
The CPI(M) called for an immediate ceasefire, urging the United Nations to reassert its role and work towards a 2-State solution with pre-1967 borders, designating East Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Palestine.
