Jammu, Oct 06: The Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee’s OBC Department on Sunday condemned the recent attack on former Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand, who is also the party’s candidate from Chhamb constituency.
In the aftermath of the attack, the JKPCC’s OBC Department convened an emergency online meeting, led by Chairman Madan Lal Chalotra, which included representatives from all districts of J&K. Participants unanimously condemned the violence and called for swift action from law enforcement agencies.
The incident, as per Chalotra, occurred at Chand’s residence in Chak Malal, near Khour, and has raised serious questions about the safety of political leaders and citizens alike.
“The failure of the police to take timely action in this case is appalling, especially given that incidents targeting Tara Chand have become a recurring issue,” Darshan Mehra, State General Secretary, JKPCC said.
Party officials and concerned citizens expressed their outrage over the lack of adequate security provisions for a prominent figure like Chand.
The Congress leaders demanded an immediate upgrade to Chand’s security detail to prevent future attempts on his life.
Madan Lal Chalotra and other party officials, including Amit Mehra, Bodh Raj and Jagdish Kashyap, called for the immediate identification and arrest of those responsible for the attack.
“This incident raises legitimate concerns about the overall law and order situation in Jammu and Kashmir,” the party leaders said, adding, “If former leaders like Tara Chand can be attacked, what does that mean for the safety of ordinary citizens? Many are questioning whether the state is adequately equipped to handle the rising threats to public safety.”
They demanded immediate identification and arrest of the culprits.
The leader said the issue must be addressed immediately to restore public confidence in the law enforcement agencies of J&K. “Tara Chand is not just a political figure but a valuable leader for the people and his safety must be ensured at all costs,” they said.
