Ramban, Dec 31: Fairoz Khan, former National President of NSUI and former Working President and elected General Secretary of Youth Congress J&K on Sunday said the sudden doubling of toll rates at the Chenani Nashree toll plaza has sparked widespread concerns among transporters and the public.
Addressing a press conference to address pressing issues surrounding the toll plaza, the Mehar Ramban tunnel and the alleged violation of FASTag guidelines, Khan highlighted the significant impact of these concerns on the region’s infrastructure and economy and urged immediate corrective action.
The Congress leader highlighted the adverse effects of such decisions on the livelihoods of residents and businesses, especially in the face of rising inflation and unemployment. He stressed the need for transparent dialogue and fair policies to mitigate the economic challenges facing Jammu and Kashmir.
Expressing serious concern over the suspension of work at the Mehar Ramban tunnel due to structural issues, Fairoz called for a thorough investigation into the reasons behind the halt. The tunnel, a critical infrastructure project aimed at improving connectivity, has experienced delays since its inception in 2011. Khan emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in vital projects to ensure the well-being of the region’s residents.
Addressing the violation of FASTag guidelines at toll plazas in Jammu and Kashmir, Khan urged authorities to strictly enforce the regulations. Reports indicate frequent violations of the 10-second rule, causing long queues and delays at toll plazas, he said and called for the authorities to prioritize seamless and efficient travel for commuters on national highways.
The Congress youth leader alleged that Union Minister Nitin Gadkari misled Parliament by unfulfilled promises regarding toll plaza measures, and said the government must prioritize policies addressing unemployment, inflation, corruption, and security issues in Jammu and Kashmir.
Fairoz Khan reiterated the Youth Congress’s commitment to advocating for the welfare of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and urged immediate action to address toll rate hikes, investigate alleged corruption and substandard material use in the Meher Tunnel, enforce FASTag guidelines, and prioritize policies promoting infrastructure development and addressing unemployment and corruption.
